Dear Delegates and Advisors,
It is our pleasure to cordially invite you to the fifth annual Edina Model United Nations Conference, taking place January 13th, 2018 at Edina High School. EMUNC was formed to provide high school students a place to collaborate and research global issues in a setting that fosters creative thinking and debate. Delegates are given the opportunity to represent positions that may be unfamiliar or conflicting with their own, subsequently expanding their worldview and knowledge of international affairs. Since our founding, advisors and delegates alike have supported our conference and stimulated discussion on many important issues. As organizers of the only student-run conference in the state of Minnesota, our leadership team has been working diligently since last May to provide an exceptional conference and experience for the delegates.
This year, our leadership team has selected two unique, current, and thought provoking topics for our delegates. The Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) will discuss National Separatist Movements, an issue that plagues nearly two dozen countries worldwide. Delegates will need to determine how the United Nations should proceed in intervention, proper prevention and response to any violence that may occur and possibility of a successful autonomous movement. The other committee, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), will debate the Peaceful Use of Outer Space, an increasingly prevalent topic since the Cold War. Delegates must discuss how to prevent an arms race between world superpowers. Additionally, delegates should consider how to keep outer space accessible to developing nations who may not have monetary capabilities to finance their own weather and disaster alert systems. Both topics have numerous details that will prove to be incredibly intriguing and relevant to discuss. Our hope is that delegates will delve deeply into the selected topics and collaborate to find solutions to address these critical issues.
On behalf of the entire EMUNC Leadership Team, I sincerely hope that you consider partaking in this memorable conference. Registration is now open for EMUNC V, and will remain open until December 22nd or until all delegate positions are filled. You can find the registration link under the registration tab on our updated website, emunc.org. Our website will also provide basic information regarding preparation for the conference as well as expectations for awards. If you have any questions, please feel to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or on the contact form on our website. We look forward to seeing you in January!
